Customer Assistance Program

Discounts for limited-income customers

We understand our customers sometimes face financial challenges, and when they do, we are ready to help. UES' Customer Assistance Residential Energy Support (CARES) Program offers monthly discounts for limited-income customers who need support in meeting their energy costs.

UES customers with limited incomes who need additional help may be eligible for emergency bill payment assistance from UES' community partners. Learn more about services available from partner agencies.

Customers who join our CARES program pay a reduced $4.90 monthly Customer Charge, a discount of more than $5 from the standard fee. They also receive usage-based discounts, as shown in the table below.

Do I Qualify?

Discounts are available to customers who meet specific eligibility requirements:

  • 1) Utility account must be in your name
  • 2) I am a current residential customer
  • 3) I meet the following financial criteria:

A household gross income for the past 12 months that is at or below the following amounts, based on the number of people in your household:

8 $60,135
More than 8 $6,090* (add per person)

*$60,135 for 8 + $6,090 for each additional person based on 2014 Federal Poverty Guidelines; above calculations are at 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Effective July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. Participating customers are required to reapply every two years.

CARES provides a $3 discount on the standard Customer Charge as well as a 15 cent-per-therm discount for up to 100 therms of gas use each month from November through April. Those discounts can reduce your expenses by up to $18 per month during home heating season, when gas use is at its highest.
